TRUTH(S) brings together a selection of photographs submitted to the Cape Town Photography Festival’s inaugural Open Call. Inviting photographers to respond to this year’s theme of TRUTH, the call attracted an exceptional range of submissions from emerging and established practitioners in South Africa and abroad.
The resulting exhibition is a testament to photography’s extraordinary capacity to question, reveal and reimagine the world around us. Across the works, truth emerges not as a fixed or singular idea, but as something deeply personal, political, environmental, emotional and, at times, deliberately constructed. From intimate reflections to acts of witness, each artist offers a distinct way of seeing.
Rather than seeking consensus, TRUTH(S) celebrates the plurality of photographic practice and reminds us that every photograph is both a record of what is seen and an interpretation of what is believed.
The Festival gratefully acknowledges the generous support of Ailsa Stoddart, whose donation of two photographs from the estate of the late Tom Stoddart helped support this year’s fundraising auction. Tom’s lifelong commitment to bearing witness through photography continues to inspire photographers around the world, and we are honoured to celebrate his legacy.
We also pay tribute to the many photojournalists – past and present, in South Africa and across the world – who have risked, and in some cases lost, their lives to ensure that history is witnessed and truth is recorded.
